OLIVER MA

Ma Fu Chi Oliver (born January 21, 1999), known professionally as Oliver Ma, is a Chinese-Filipino street performer in Hong Kong. Recognized for his musical versatility, artistic reinventions, English-singing abilities & activism, he is a prominent cultural figure in the city.

Ma began busking professionally at age 18 after he graduated from high school in 2017. He released his 1st cover collection "...Ready For It?" with 3 remixes, namely the "studio," "studio acapella" and "acoustic" versions, in 2019. He also released 21 self-directed music videos as a visual element to accompany each cover on the studio version of the record throughout 2019 and 2020. Following political and media scrutiny, he then forwent his "colourful" and "produced" image for a more "dark" and "stripped down" image, which inspired the "street live" version of his 1st cover collection "...Ready For It?" as well as his 2nd and 3rd for "Fall" and "Moonlight" in 2021. After releasing his Patreon-exclusive "221 Remix Cover Collection" and his accompanying 22nd self-directed music video cover for "I Did Something Bad" by Taylor Swift as a symbol for his rebirth, he traded off his "dark" image back to "colourful" while still maintaining his "stripped down" image. He released his 4th "street live" cover collection "Christmas" to go with his "red santa" image in 2022. He then released his 5th-10th for "Imagine," "Yellow," "Rainbow," "Lover," "Oceans" and "Kingdom" to complete the rest of the colours of the rainbow in 2023.

Ma has been featured in articles such as Hong Kong Free Press, HK01, Ming Pao, The Epoch Times, The Witness, Dimsum Daily, Coconuts, and the now debunked Apple Daily and Stand News. Honored with the title "Glory to Hong Kong" singer, Ma is an advocate for artists' rights and freedom of artistic expression.

Shortly after the musical ended in 2017, Ma was introduced to the street performing scene by Timothy B. Fermin, a student and friend from another high school branch of the Delia Group of Schools, Delia Memorial School (Broadway), who sold his amplifier to him. Ma did not have any money at the time, so his music teacher, Jacky Tai, who was also one of his mentors throughout the musical, lent him money to purchase the necessary equipment to start busking. He started performing at the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier before branching out to performing in various districts across the city. At age nineteen, through word of mouth, he got in contact with music producer from Delia Memorial School (Matteo Ricci) (now Hip Wo 2) Chris J. Lee who aided him with the production of his 1st studio cover collection "...Ready For It?" as well as the acoustic version, which were released on July 21, 2019. He also got in contact with video producers and fellow alumni Anthony Asis and John Razalo, and eventually crossed paths with William Chan, who assisted in the production of his self-directed music videos on YouTube to accompany each of the 21 cover songs on his studio cover collection.

2021: 221

At age 22, Ma released his Patreon-exclusive remix cover collection "221," which includes "221 remix covers (he) had vocally recorded and produced from home for fun in the past 7 years," on January 21, 2021. Simultaneously, he also collaborated with John Razalo who produced his promotional video for his remix cover of "22" by Taylor Swift, in honour of his 22nd birthday.

2021: ...Ready For It?, Fall and Moonlight

Ma crossed paths with video producer Henz Wong, who took candid shots of him during his street performances, who eventually helped to shoot his one-take street live cover videos on YouTube to accompany his street live cover collections for "...Ready For It?," "Fall" and "Moonlight," from July to December of 2021.

2022: I Did Something Bad

At age 23, Ma released his 22nd self-directed music video animation remix cover of "I Did Something Bad" by Taylor Swift, which he co-produced with DECT, on October 31, 2022.

2022-2023: Christmas, Imagine, Yellow, Rainbow, Lover, Oceans, and Kingdom

After passing by one of fellow street performer Ripetie's performance videos on his Instagram feed, Ma connected with listed video producer Matthew Ip via direct message on Instagram who helped to shoot his one-take street live cover videos on YouTube to accompany his street live cover collection for "Christmas," which was released on December 21, 2022.

After asking on his Instagram stories for a new video producer due to Ip not being able to assist his projects further, Ma got in contact with video producer Leon Chen who was affiliated with one of his followers who saw his story, who helped to shoot the rest of his one-take street live cover videos on YouTube to accompany his street live cover collections for "Imagine," "Yellow," "Rainbow," "Lover," "Oceans" and "Kingdom" which were released on Apr 21, May 21, June 21, Aug 21, Sep 21 and Oct 21, 2023 respectively.

Artistry

Influences

One of Ma's earliest memories of dabbling into music is when his parents took him to a Filipino store in a nearby mall to sing into their karaoke machines. As a child, Ma enjoyed Disney film soundtracks, especially the High School Musical film series. The series in turn encouraged his fascination for performing and competing in school events to make his own high school experience a musical one too. As a preteen, Ma found himself a fan of Justin Bieber during his RNB-inspired pop My World era. As an early teenager, Ma found himself to be a fan of the country-turned-pop icon Taylor Swift, during her Red era. He attributed his own showmanship to that of Swift's, which was a key factor to his 1st place for performing his lively rendition of her song "Stay Stay Stay" in his school inter-house singing and dancing competition at age fourteen and a 2nd runner-up for his theatrical rendition of the song "Blank Space" in his school inter-school talent competition at age sixteen. As a late teenager, when Swift took an extra year off since the release of her 1980s synth-pop driven 1989 album, Ma found himself indulging in 80s-pop inspired work from another pop artist Lady Gaga. Inspired by Gaga's vocal delivery and bravery, he attempted to tone down the theatrics and explore the darker tones in his voice in his next performance, which earned him his 2nd champion in his school inter-house singing competition at age seventeen. When Ma picked up the guitar after he graduated from high school at age eighteen, he attributed his guitar-playing to Swift by learning to play and sing to all of Swift's discography on guitar. When he started busking for a living, he had "always had (his) eye on Mr. Wally," a Japanese busker in Hong Kong. It was "because of him that (Ma) was inspired to explore (his) alter egos and express all sorts of different sides to (him), dress the way (he) wanted to, no matter how weird or so-called 'childish' it was, and sing the songs (he) wanted to, regardless if it was not the usual Cantonese or Mandarin songs." He also found street performing videos of Allie Sherlock, an Irish street performer, from her YouTube channel, who inspired him to start his own and post his street acoustic live performances too.

Due to various song requests by passersby during his street performances throughout the years, apart from the above mentioned artists, Ma also found himself inspired by the likes of Christina Perri, Ellie Goulding, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Ava Max, Idina Menzel, Jessie J, Meghan Trainor, Jason Mraz, Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, One Direction, Avril Lavigne, Imagine Dragons, Green Day, Ash, Luna Halo, Plain White T's, Earth, Wind & Fire, Toploader, Grace Vanderwaal, Emilia Rydberg, Elvis Presley, J. Fred Coots, Haven Gillespie, Eartha Kitt, Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey, Wham!, Jule Styne, Gene Autry and the Cass Country Boys, James Lord Pierpoint, Bobby Helms, Nos Galan, Thomas Oliphant, Isaac Watts, Lowell Mason, Joseph Mohr, Franz Xaver Gruber, Irving Berlin, Ernst Anschutz, Melchior Franck, Arthur Warrell, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, Louis Armstrong, Fool's Garden, Bill Withers, John Denver, the Carpenters, the Beatles, ABBA, Oasis, Coldplay, Keane, Randy Newman, Ben E. King, Lenka, Elton John, the Shirelles, Phil Collins, Frankie Valli, Nat King Cole, Daniela Andrade, Sam Smith, John Legend, James Arthur, Stephen Sanchez, George Benson, Eric Clapton, Shane Filan, Shania Twain, Kacey Musgraves, Bradley Cooper, Bryan Adams, Robbie Williams, Richard Marx, Westlife, Calum Scott, Air Supply, Journey, Aerosmith, Radiohead, James Blunt, Passenger, Hugh Grant, Haley Bennett, Bob Dylan, Lewis Capaldi, Adele, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Madonna, Cher, Cyndi Lauper, Beyonce, Madonna, Katy Perry, Hayley Kiyoko, Mad Tsai, Troye Sivan, Conan Gray, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish and Lily Allen, enough to cover at least one song from each of them on his YouTube channel.

Genres

Voice

Ma possesses a baritone vocal range and a generally soft but versatile timbre. As a vocalist, his voice could cross over genres and has the habit of singing with his head voice and falsetto and opting for lighter tones in rural areas of Hong Kong while using more of his diaphragm and heavier tones in urban areas of the city.

Video and Film

Ma emphasizes visuals as a key creative component of his music making process. He has collaborated with different video producers and directed all of his own music and street live video covers on YouTube. Apart from his music video cover for "Applause" by Lady Gaga which he co-directed with William Chan, Ma developed the concept and treatment for the rest of his 20 music video covers to accompany the 21 tracks on his studio cover collection "...Ready for It?" throughout 2019 and 2020 in which he co-produced the music video cover for the title track with Ariane G. Calica and Anthony Asis and the rest of the remaining 19 with John Razalo. In 2021, Ma collaborated with video producer Henz Wong who shot his one-take street live cover videos on YouTube to accompany his street live cover collections for "...Ready For It?," "Fall" and "Moonlight," from July to December of 2021.

Ma released his 22nd self-directed music video animation cover for "I Did Something Bad" by Taylor Swift, which he co-produced with DECT, on October 31, 2022. Ma finally collaborated with video producer Matthew Ip who helped to shoot his one-take street live cover videos on YouTube to accompany his street live cover collection for "Christmas," which was released on December 21, 2022. Finally, Ma got in contact with video producer Leon Chen who helped to shoot the rest of his one-take street live cover videos on YouTube to accompany his street live cover collection for "Imagine," "Yellow," "Rainbow," "Lover," "Oceans" and "Kingdom" which were released throughout 2023. Ma has cited Joseph Khan, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga to be his main filmmaking influences.

Achievements

At age thirteen, Ma started to become interested in singing contests in his school. At age fourteen he competed for their inter-house singing and dancing competition called "DanSing• 舞Sing家族 (2012-2013)" and got champion for singing. At age sixteen, he competed in their inter-school talent competition called "Joint School Talent Contest (2014-2015)" run by their Joint-School Students' Welfare Association where he got 2nd runner-up. On Aug 8, 2020, Ma was arbitrarily arrested for the 1st time for "suspicion of criminal intimidation" on July 27, 2020 and the 2nd time for "obstruction of police operation" & "possession of weapon" on Aug 8, 2020 for singing "Glory to Hong Kong" on the streets, prompting him to announce to his social media on Oct 21, 2020 that his "full-time street performances will no longer continue."

On Feb 23, 2021, Ma's verdict for two charges of "noise pollution caused by musical instrument and amplifier" while singing "Glory to Hong Kong" on the streets that dated back to July 7, 2020 was that he was found not guilty, which eventually gave him the confidence to announce his return to the street performing scene on May 21, 2021. On that same day, Ma was arbitrarily arrested again for the 3rd time for "behaving disorderly in a public place" while singing "Glory to Hong Kong" on the streets. On June 2, 2021, Ma was found guilty for "failure to wear a mask in public" while singing "Glory to Hong Kong" on the streets on Aug 8, 2020, prompting a fine of HK$3500.
